Reviews of software and apps for computers and mobile devices

BarTender Print Portal App for Android and iOS

Seagull Scientific have released an app for Android and Apple phones and tablets. I was going to have a play with this as soon as it was released, but I thought I’d let the dust settle just in case there were any bugs or unfinished features in the app (wishful thinking as there hasn’t been any updates in nearly a year). I’d say it would be a wise choice to wait for the next version (BarTender 2017?) as today you will stumble into a plethora of teething problems.

Setting up

Firstly, a lot of the setting up is done through the “Web Print Portal” web page on the host machine which can be accessed locally through http://localhost/BarTender/. Once you can access it from another machine (by allowing the IIS option in Windows Firewall), you can continue setting it up, change other settings, and print remotely from the host. This is perfect as you can have the software and printer connected to a dedicated computer or server and print labels from an unlimited amount of computers on the same network. If you setup your port forwarding just right on your router, you will be able to print from outside your internal network as well. I would advise a word of caution doing this though, as you could end up with anyone from all over the world being able to print or changing settings within the print portal. You can setup a username and password to prevent unauthorised tinkering.

Update: Leitz Icon Label Printer Re-Review

Leitz Icon Label Printer

Pros Cons
WiFi & USB I found the software still crashes on selecting address templates
Optional battery pack I found the mobile app to be slow and in some case unresponsive
Easy to load tapes No standby or power off which could mean a flat battery

Introduction

Leitz have released a printer that dives right into the middle of the market. With die-cut, continuous, paper and plastic labels, this printer will help suit any requirement around the home, office or even a warehouse. Compatible with Android, iOS, Mac and Windows over USB or WiFi.
Please read the original review first. They were a little disappointed with the score I previously gave it. They have since updated the software, released the mobile app for Android and supplied me with the battery and some other tapes to try. Consider this review the real review.Continue Reading…

LabelStation Design & Print Software Compare

Caution: metaphors ahead.

BarTender vs LabelDirect

To compare these two brands of software is like comparing the M14 sports car made by the small British car manufacturer, Noble, to a BMW M5. They both the do same job but in a slightly different way. Both cars will get you from A-B but one will be more comfortable, have more gadgets, have more of a presence on the road and perform slightly better, while the other is cheaper and British.

The software side-by-side has very much the same sort of aura about it. One is full of many advanced features, is easier to use, has a nicer user interface, while the other is more of an entry level product.

Now allow me to elaborate on what I’m trying to say here.

LabelStation Design & Print Software Review: LabelDirect

Basic

Possibly the most user friendly labelling application on the market. The Basic edition of LabelDirect has many features such as text, a modest range of shapes, images and 15 types of barcodes. It also has the ability for a user prompt at the time of print so data can be changed without physically altering anything in the label design itself. In addition to the fixed fonts available in the printer this software can introduce into your label any of the fully scalable fonts provided by Windows, making artistic layouts possible with the same ease as more businesslike layouts like the one shown below, which can be useful in the retail environment. [See update below regarding this section] Like most labelling applications, LabelDirect can export labels to the printer’s flash memory where they may be accessed from a separate keyboard to make stand-alone printing possible. Even with a “dumb” keyboard like the KDU4350 it is possible for labels to include variable data fields which prompt the user for information at print time.

Professional

The professional edition includes all the features of the basic but also has database and spreadsheet connectivity. With this feature you can design a standard label template that will import the data from the selected source to print into the variable fields. A batch of labels may consist of the entire database may be printed as Either all or just the selected rows (records) by way of the “Print List” function. The print quantity for each label can be chosen at print time or controlled by a field in the database, the latter allowing full automation. It’s very convenient, when compiling a Print List, that you can use Shift+click to select a contiguous block of records and Ctrl+click to make a non contiguous selection.

LabelStation Design & Print Software Review: BarTender

Ultralite

The Ultralite edition ships with every current LabelStation and is included in the price of the printer. The software will allow you to produce intricate labels at ease and works much like office-style software with all the familiar keyboard commands such as Ctrl+C for copy and Ctrl+V for paste on all objects. In addition to a selection of Printer fonts and all the usual Windows fonts, Ultralite can produce barcodes in more than 90 different types. During installation you will receive a selection of new fonts for icon and symbology insertion. The many symbols include, but are not limited to, electrical, safety and packaging. With these symbols being in font format, they are vectorised and therefore can be resized without the risk of quality loss. If you choose a networked printer, you’ll be happy to know that this software can be installed on as many computers as required without the need for additional licenses. The software is limited to printing to a LabelStation printer only which shouldn’t be a problem in most cases as this edition is only included with a LabelStation printer and not otherwise available.

Basic

This edition is the same as above but is a single PC license that will allow you to print to more than just a LabelStation. You’ll be able to produce high quality labels and print them to many other well-known brands of printers including laser and inkjet models.
