How to Setup Printers with Loop Locks

Even when using one of our Labelstations to print on our loop locks, they can always seem a little tricky to set up first time. Here I will go through the details of setting up a loop lock template and how to adjust margins and sensor settings.

Our loop locks always feed off with the holes (or the “locks”) first. This doesn’t make it any easier or harder to setup but it is worth noting this should you wish to print on both sides.
Looking at the diagrams below you will see that the actual tag length (A) differs from what the printer thinks is the tag length (B). This is because of the “locking” design (C & D). The “notch” (C) for the lock is also the gap for sensing where the tag starts and finishes. The remainder of the locking design (D) will be set as an unprintable area or “margin” which will in turn leave the printing area (E) for your label design.

Ensure that your gap sensor in your printer is in alignment with any of the notches (C). If you’re using a Labelstation Pro200/300 the gap sensor is in the green guides that close up to the tags so ensure they are snug and that the tags are not going to move left or right. If you’re using a Labelstation Pro240/340/XL or Industrial you’ll find your sensor marked with an arrow on a green bar that protrudes from the left under the print head.

How To Update DYMO XTL 300 Firmware

If you are experiencing issues with the DYMO XTL 300 machine not recognizing tapes, it may be that your machine needs a firmware update.

The first thing that DYMO recommend when your XTL 300 machine doesn’t recognize the tape cartridges is to update the firmware. Below you is a step by step guide on how to do it from DYMO:

Update the XTL 300 firmware through DYMO ID:

1. Connect the printer to your computer.
A message screen should appear stating that a software update is available.
2. Follow the instructions in the update screen to update the software.

If the software update screen does not appear after connecting the label maker:

1. From the DYMO ID menu, select About > Label makers and select your label maker.
2. Select Update available.
3. When the update screen appears, follow the instructions to update the label maker software.
4. When update is complete, turn the power off and then on again.

Press and hold the power button for at least five seconds to make sure the power is completely off and not just in standby mode.

We hope this is of help to you!

Using BarTender With Brother QL & Dymo LabelWriter Printers

Please note: the following tutorial will not work with BarTender Ultralite (which is an edition supplied with some printers). The minimum edition required is BarTender Basic.

BarTender is well known for working with our LabelStation printers, Zebra, TEC and TSC printers. One question that has come to my attention, is whether or not it would work with lower budget printers such as Brother and Dymo. Obviously this needed to be investigated.

I’m using BarTender Enterprise Automation, which is the highest edition available, but this tutorial will work with all editions except for Ultralite.

Does it actually work?

Missing Print, Vertical Lines & Cleaning Your Label Printer

missingprintHave you ever printed from your label printer and noticed a straight vertical line of missing print? It might be only about <1mm wide going through your text, an image or even a barcode which can prevent it from being read correctly. This can mean one of two things:

  • Your printhead is dirty
  • Your print head needs replacing

Hopefully it’s the first of the two. If it is then here are some solutions that can help clean that muck off.
